Wandering Gypsy Brewing Co., a beautiful and flawless combination of a craft brewery and a specialty coffee house. Located in the rural area of Ransomville, NY, Wandering Gypsy offers a farmhouse feel inside of a pole barn setting. Their website states, it’s “The place to gather,” and I can’t think of a better description. The vibe is very welcoming, it gives “Cheers, where everybody knowns your name,” and even if they don’t know your name when you get there, they absolutely will by the time you leave.
The owners are a husband-and-wife team who decided to make their brewery dream a reality. Opening in 2020, they dedicated their heart and soul to make it through the pandemic, and continue, to this day, to gain a loyal following of craft beer and coffee lovers alike. We had the pleasure of meeting and talking with one of the owners, Bob, who so graciously shared the story of the birth of Wandering Gypsy Co., I say birth, because it truly has become, in his own words, their third child. Bob shared with us a tour of the brewery and it really put into perspective how much commitment, time and patience it takes to master this craft of brewing. But I must highlight that what makes this place so special is not just the beer, it’s great food, great coffee and most importantly a sense of community. There is a lot to love about this place so I will get into it…
I mentioned the Wandering Gypsy is a brewery AND a coffee shop and as the Brewsy Blogger I can’t think of a better combination in one establishment, but I also need to bring attention to the food menu because, oh my goodness!!! There is a breakfast and lunch menu, we went for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. Breakfast at Wandering Gypsy offers various sandwich options; I had The Betty, a sausage and egg sandwich topped with sharp cheddar and a jalapeño cranberry aioli all on a DiCamillo roll that was to die for. The jalapeno cranberry aioli really made the sandwich pop, and I could have just eaten a jar of that. Kevin had The Classic, egg and sharp cheddar with your choice of bacon or sausage also on a DiCamillo roll. I didn’t try his because I was too distracted by my own sandwich, however, he did say it was made perfectly and he really enjoyed it. They had a specials menu that offered jalapeño cheddar grits, we shared these and I wish I had gotten my own because I have never enjoyed grits so much. If you go and they are on the menu, please get them and thank me later. They had the perfect amount of flavor, not overly spicey but very cheesy, which is always a gold star from me. Jennifer (the wife in the husband/wife owner team) makes these grits from a special recipe and has absolutely perfected them. I mentioned they also offer a lunch menu (starts serving at 11am), while we didn’t have lunch, I can’t imagine you could make a bad choice based off how delicious breakfast was. For reference, lunch offers sandwiches like Beef on Weck or The Grove (a grilled brie sandwich), and finger foods like dill dip or pickled veggies. Additionally, there is a kid’s menu with the classics like PB&J. They also have biscuits and jam, which I am going to have to go back and try out soon.
For coffee choices I went with the Oatmeal Cookie Latte and Kev had the Banana Bread Latte. Both were the perfect amount of sweetness and coffee flavor. The coffee menu offers a lot of variety, with choices from your basic Americano to special latte flavors, vanilla chai and even hot chocolate or tea. Another nice feature of this menu is that you can get any of the hot beverages cold as well.
Okay, so we ate breakfast and drank coffee, now it was clearly time for beer. Craft breweries, you will find, are always changing things up and keeping the options coming. Today’s beer list included 3 different IPAs, a coffee oatmeal stout, a Marzen, Kolsch, fruited Kolsch, and a fruited sour, oh and can’t forget to mention the Beermosas done with Kolsch or fruited Kolsch or you could do a sour or IPA. I personally am a dark beer drinker in the winters, I prefer stouts and porters, and, in the summer, I stick to sours. My choice today was the coffee oatmeal stout, Kevin got the same and we agreed it was a smooth stout, not overly heavy, making it very drinkable. I was too curious about the Beermosa to pass it up, so I had one made with the sour beer on the menu. It was the perfect combination of orange juice and beer and surprisingly not too sweet. We sampled all 3 of the IPAs which offered three very different flavors, which if you drink IPAs, you know is not always the case. These all offered a variety in hoppiness, and we found them all to be great options. Kevin had a full pour of the All Natural (IPA).
You can expect average pricing throughout all the menus. The sandwiches ranged from $4.50-$9 and the highest priced item on the coffee menu is $6. Beers, depending on the pour size, are $3-$7.50, and they do offer beer crowlers ranging from $14.50-$17, depending on your beer of choice.
Whether you are a family out and about looking for a good spot for food, out for a day date wanting to grab a couple of beers, or just in the mood for a good coffee, you will find it all at Wandering Gypsy Co., truly “the place to gather.”
